Almost 5 billion people use social media worldwide. Emerging evidence suggests that effects of social media on political attitudes, trust, and well-being may be different in different countries. In the Global Social Media Experiment, hundreds of researchers from more than 20 countries are working to conduct a cross-cultural field experiment, where participants are incentivized to reduce their social media screen time for two weeks. In Sweden, this collaborative effort involves researchers from Jönköping University, Karolinska Institute, Lund University, Stockholm University, University of Gothenburg, and other Nordic institutions. The group has entrusted me with the role of team leader, which I’m grateful for and excited about.
